FAQ

Help and Advice.

 How much do you charge?

Our charges are based on the date, times, duration and location of your function. We don’t operate a fixed fee or an hourly rate, as almost every function is different. If you are looking for the cheapest price, we won't be the right company for you, however you may be pleasantly surprised how affordable our quote is. The security and peace of mind from booking with an established company as opposed to a "one man band" DJ who may not turn up on the day is worth a few extra pounds.

What kind of music do you play?

Our DJs knowledge and CD collections span the decades, encapsulating the finest musical moments from the 50s, the Rock & Roll years, the swinging 60s, sensational 70s, the 80s, 90s, 00s and the sounds of today. Our DJs age range spans from 18 to 60, so whether you’re looking for an experienced personality DJ for a family function, a seasoned professional for a corporate bash, or a cooler jock to create the right vibe at your 18th/21st or uni/college ball, look no further.

 Will you play requests?

Yes, of course! It is YOUR function and you should be able to hear the music YOU want to listen to (not just what a DJ might think you SHOULD listen to!!) You may compile and submit a list of requests and dedications in advance using our online system (click the 'Select Music' button on the home page) and you can also invite your family & friends to contribute to your list via a Facebook link. We will also be very happy to take requests on the night from you and your guests. Once submitted, your completed requests list is given to your DJ in advance of the function, to help him/her prepare for your party. Please ensure your completed requests are submitted online at least one week before the date of your function. We don't limit the amount of requests you can submit, however as a guide, around twenty tracks per hour are normally played (the average length of a tune being around three minutes), so you may want to allow some time for your guests' requests made on the night to be played.

What equipment will the DJ bring?

The price quoted includes a DJ with professional sound equipment and effects lighting, suitable for the number of guests you have indicated. Put simply, your DJ will come with the correct equipment to do a great job! We don't clutter our website with lists of equipment & technical specifications - that would be like a bridalwear company detailing their sewing machines, when you're really just interested in the dress! If however you would like to "talk technical", your DJ will be willing to do so.

Why have some DJs got equipment photos online and others haven't?

We began adding equipment photos a few months ago and haven't photographed all the rigs yet. We intend to complete the exercise in the next few months. The purpose of the photos is to give a flavour of what the systems look like, both static and in action. Equipment used will vary depending on venue size, access, setup time, the event itself and any specific customer requests.

Can I choose my DJ from the profiles on your website?

Possibly - depending on availability and geography. If you like a particular DJ's profile, feel free to ask if he/she is available on your chosen date and covers your area. Because we cover all of Southern England, not all DJs work in all locations. Also, some DJs will already be working on a given date. However, you are welcome to discuss with us the style of DJ you are looking for and we will ensure we match the right DJ in your area to your function.

 Do you confirm in writing?

Yes, we issue a contract showing all the details about your function, which is signed by both parties.

How can I be sure you won't let me down?

Your DJ will sign a similar contract with us, specific to your function and is supplied with a detailed map showing how to get to your party. We have DJs on standby in case of sickness, etc. and our Customer Services Department is manned from 8.00am to beyond midnight, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You will never get an answerphone (we don’t own one!) and you will never get diverted to a mobile. You can always speak to a member of our Operations Team at any time during these hours. Try us and see... Freephone 0800 801228.

How far away is the DJ coming from?

Normally your DJ will live within half an hour of your party, however where a particular DJ is requested, we will always endeavour to oblige, even if it means a longer journey.

How long do you need to set up, and how much space do you require?

For most functions we will allow an hour for setting up, and an area approx. 3m x 2m is ideal. For larger functions more time (and space) may be required.

Does it make any difference to the cost if my party is upstairs?

We ask if the party is on the ground floor, first floor, etc. to ensure the DJ knows where he/she is going to be set up. A DJ will often allow longer to set up if it’s upstairs. However please be assured we do not charge extra for going upstairs!

What kind of lighting do you use?

We have a selection of coloured lighting effects to create a party ambience at your venue. A smoke or haze machine used sensibly can dramatically enhance the lighting effect on the dancefloor, and is available upon request when booking at no extra charge, however please check in advance that your venue allows the use of a smoke/haze machine.

Can you provide a bubble machine?

No. Our insurance company does not allow the use of bubble machines, as they can leave a slippery residue on the floor, increasing the risk of an accident. Also, if the bubble fluid comes into contact with leather clothing, it may leave permanent staining.

 What will the DJ wear?

Our dress code is either smart casual, shirt & tie or black tie upon request. Please indicate your preference when making your enquiry.

 Do you do Children's Parties?

Yes, we have a number of DJs who are experienced in children’s discos, however we do ask for parental supervision!

Have you got Public Liability Insurance?

We hold £5m Public Liability Insurance cover, a copy of our current certificate is available on request.

What about Health & Safety – is your equipment tested?

Equipment is Portable Appliance (PAT) tested annually in accordance with the Health & Safety Executive, Electricity at Work Act 1989. A copy of your DJ’s current test certificate is available on request.

Can I speak to the DJ before the function?

After you have submitted your music requests online, we will gladly arrange a conference call to introduce you to your DJ. You can discuss any aspects of your function on the call.

One of our guests is a professional DJ. Can he/she play a set at our function?

This must be requested and arranged in advance of your event and you will need to book a DJ Production package through eventpahire.co.uk (A1 Discos Ltd's PA Hire Department).

 How do I pay?

Personal Customers may pay either the full amount or a booking deposit by cheque, credit card, debit card, internet transfer, or in cash over the counter at any branch of Barclays Bank. The balance may be paid by any of the above means ten days prior to the function. A receipt is provided. Account facilities are available to business customers (subject to status), with an invoice being issued following the function, which may be settled by cheque or BACS.

My function is in 2011 - will the January VAT increase affect me?

If you have paid a deposit before 4th January 2011, your function will be at the current 17.5% VAT rate, even if your function is later in the year and you still have a balance to pay. This is because the tax point for the full fee is the date we receive your deposit. However, if you pay your deposit on or after 4th January 2011, your function will be at the new VAT rate of 20%
